Feature & Follow is a blog hop hosted by Parajunkee & Alison Can Read.
The purpose is to meet new people and gain more followers in the book blogging community.
I'm this week's feature!!!
Hooray!
You can check out my interview below:
When did you start blogging?
Well this little baby has only been in operation Since August, I decided since I was going to be a professional author ;) that I needed a website. The poor thing gets neglected a lot due to all the time it takes to run my review site Book Me!
What is your favorite part of book blogging?
Well, on my other site it's partaking in memes and visiting the lovely followers I've made. I've formed some very close friendships with some terrific girls and I'm so thankful to have them in my cyber-life. Carmen Jenner.com is so new but I'm hoping to be able to really use this site as a writing tool. Eventually I'd like to be build a fanbase, post snippets of stories I'm working on, as well as some flash fiction and not just use it as a place where I say, "Oh look, I write books, you can buy them here."
What is your favorite book(s)?
There are way too many! I'm a sucker for an Armentrout book, I'll read and love anything by her. But I think my favourite would be Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma. That book almost killed me! It was absolutely devastating and so courageous of Tabitha to tackle such a taboo subject, especially in YA. I remember reading the synopsis and thinking, "What would possess anyone to write that, and I wonder whether she pulls it off?" I had to read it immediately, and I'm so glad I did. It's weird how one little fiction book can teach you so much.
What has been the best thing that has happened to you because of book blogging?
Being published, without a doubt. I started blogging on Book Me! just to have somewhere to vent after I'd read a book, none of my friends are particularly Bookish people, and since I spent so much time reading and writing, I really felt like I was missing out on some sort of vital connection. I never really grasped just how big the book blogging community was until I started doing the Feature Follow. I'd been working for years at my writing, but it's the writing to an audience that's really helped me hone my voice and have the courage to seek publication.
Q: What writing device or trick most irritates you when reading a book? For example, if an author employs an omnipotent narrator that is sometimes considered bad form.
Third person narrative!
There's a few little writing tricks that annoy the holy bejebbies out of me, the first is definitely a Third Person Narrative! Before Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments series, a Third Person narrative used to send me running for the hills. Now I can tolerate it a little more, but I still find it such an impersonal way of conveying a character's story. I know, I know, there are millions of authors that write this way everyday and their books are a huge success, it's certainly easier to cover all your bases with a TPN and to follow multiple story lines that the protagonist may not be present for, but to me it's a writing style that really lacks emotion.
A big, huge thank you to the lovely girls who make this meme possible, Alison and Rachel!
You Ladies are incredible for bringing all of us bloggers together to share in the love!

I think I prefer first person but I don't think third person has ever bothered me. Geez for some reason I can't think of anything that stands out to me that drives me nuts.
ReplyDeleteold follower btw
DeleteIt's funny - I tend to rely on first person when writing, but prefer third person when reading.
ReplyDeleteNew follower! I have no problem with third person though! It's fine by me!
ReplyDeleteHopping through. Congrats on being the feature! I prefer first person, but I don't usually mind third person.
ReplyDeleteMy Hop
I agree! I usually detest 3rd person narration but Cassandra Clare's books are one of the few exceptions to that.

Old follower, congrats on the feature and just hopping by the FF. Here's my link

Congrats on being featured! I prefer first person, but if the stories good, then third person is OK!!

Congrats on the feature!! I love your page! How the book is my cursor and how the follow me links spin!! I want that too!!
ReplyDeleteGreat answer, BTW, I prefer 1st person though, but have read some 3rd person stuff and find it a little difficult to follow too.

I'm sorry you haven't found many third person narratives that convey emotions sufficiently. :( Congratulations on being the feature, though!
ReplyDeleteNew follower. My FF: http://moonlit-librarian.blogspot.com/2012/10/feature-and-follow-friday-october-26.html
I agree writing style that lacks emotion is not good, I read a book that would have been a best seller if there was some emotion not just facts, play by play.

Yay! You're the feature! :) Old follower....I don't care for cliffhangers, but mostly I hate anything that happens due to coincidence. I like logical steps to a conclusion.

Congrats on being featured!! And I see what you're saying. But third person doesn't really bother me.

PS: I love the little book mouseover too! SO CUTE! <3
Congrats on the featured blog honor! I love your blog so I am glad you were chosen :) I also used to hate third person narrative but after reading a few really good books in third person it has grown on me. I still prefer first person because you are right there in the MC's head feeling everything they are feeling. Thanks for sharing.

Congrats on the feature! Third person never really bothered me. I don't tend to focus too much on the POV when I'm reading but I've always been a strange one :)
ReplyDeleteI'm a new follower.

I know what you mean about the Third Person POV, while its normally my favourite style I have seen it abused. I have just finished a book that was written this way and it came off sounding like the Descriptive Video on Television for the visually impaired.

ReplyDeleteI agree, third person narrative decreases emotion, but only if done poorly, I think.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on being featured! New GFC follower :)

Third person POV is really nice if it's well written. Really good answer!
ReplyDeleteNew follower here! :)
Congrats on being featured! Glad I came across your blog. Really cool stuff. :)

I prefer first person but I will read any P.O.V as long as it's done well. My boyfriends mother refuses to read anything in first person, it's third person or nothing for her!

ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of third person narration either... As a character-driven reader, it just feels impersonal...

ReplyDeleteI never used to be a huge fan of third person narrative... but I've actually grown to love it. :) Great answer!
Third person narratives bother me sometimes, but they bother me more when the story switches from third to first or vice versa.
ReplyDeleteI see many people share my distaste for a third person POV. I hate it too, it feels stuffy reading a novel written in third person POV, and usually in the situation of a third person view we have no funny jokes from characters at all. It takes the fun right out of the book which is supposed to be an entertainment. Of course I have read books written in a third person view, it's everywhere and mostly found in MG books, some are good, the narrative voice was less serious but some are just... painful... My head hurts just to wrap around an idea about who the character really is. Did he/she like reading? Or a more outdoorsy type? These would be easily explained and introduced if we are getting the story from the character's head.

I love third person narration when it's done well. I feel like it's harder to do as well, but I'm more appreciative of a book I loved in 3rd person. I suppose I just feel like first person narration usually always helps the reader connect, so I give 3rd person narrative way more credit.
ReplyDeleteGood answer.

Congrats on the Feature.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you to some extent, as sometimes I find the 1st person view so restrictive, not knowing so much, and if the author never does anther POV, then its really restrictive. It just depends on the author I suppose.
